Synopsis

Tetsuomi Tateishi was a Japanese painter born in Taiwan. His achievements were forgotten as he was repatriated to Japan after WWII and most of his paintings were lost. He lived a tough life and earned a living as an illustrator for children’s books but finally achieved a unique style in his last years. The film reveals Tateishi’s ambition, struggle and his lonely life as a painter, reflecting the dramatic political, cultural and social changes in Taiwan.

Director

KUO Liang-yin and FUJITA Shuhei each received an MFA from the USC film school. Their international collaboration on filmmaking between Taiwan and Japan started in 2000 and has produced four documentaries, including [Searching for the Zero Fighters], [Shonenko], [Suspended Duty - Taiwan Military Training Regiment], [Wansei Painter - Tetsuomi Tateishi], and one feature length narrative film, [Quiet Summer]. All of them tell the history of Taiwan before and after the Second World War from unique viewpoints.
