An angry miner, a migrant worker, a pretty receptionist and a young factory worker. A reflection on contemporary China: that of an economic giant slowly being eroded by violence.

JIA Zhangke was born in Shanxi Province in China in 1970. A graduate from the Department of Literature at the Beijing Film Academy, Jia is one of the leading figures of the Six Generation Movement in Chinese cinema. He caught the international film festivals’ attention with his first film, [Pickpocket], in 1997. His [Platform] (2000) and [Still Life] (2006) were voted respectively the second and third best films of the noughties by the Toronto International Film Festival, and he was awarded the Golden Coach at the 2015 Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes.
